Makongo is an administrative ward in the Kinondoni district of the Dar es Salaam region of Tanzania. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 43,796. Makongo has four subwards including Mlalakua, Makongo Juu, Mbuyuni, and Changanyikeni.

Makongo is characterized by numerous valleys and rivulets, many of them emptying into the Mbezi River or the Mlalakuwa River. Makongo, especially in the Mlalakua subwards, lacks basic infrastructure such as stormwater drains, leading to subsequent floods. Mlalakuwa is also a former paddy farm before city expansion

Community meetings were conducted in all four subwards with the aim of identifying important community assets and flood risks associated so as to support ward leaders in disaster management planning. After the meeting RH team curated the information, produced maps and shared them back with the community members and trained them on how they can use the maps.
