To work towards
accomplishing this, community mappers identify areas on a basemap that
are most detrimentally affected by floods. Thereafter, they use pencil
to map flood prone areas upon tracing paper over a basemap. The output
of this is then scanned and the contained data is digitized into
shapefiles and uploaded onto OpenStreetMap.

When the maps are finished, they are
combined with other data in InaSAFE to run realistic flooding scenarios.
The findings are collected and lead to the development of tailored
training in disaster preparation for ward officials and community
members.

What is InaSAFE?

InaSAFE is free software that produces
realistic natural hazard impact scenarios for better planning,
preparedness, and response activities. It provides a simple but rigorous
way to combine data from scientists, local governments and communities
to provide insights into the likely impacts of future disaster events.

InaSAFE is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) project, published under the GPL V3 license. You may freely download, share and (if you like) modify the software.

How to Install and Use InaSAFE

InaSAFE is a plugin for QGIS.
