Participatory Mapping for Historical Flood Inundation Extents

As the neighbourhoods of Ramani Huria have been mapped, it is now possible to start building upon these maps. This can take many forms, but the community is at the heart of how these maps are being used. One approach is participatory mapping, where community members and local government leaders work together to sketch out the extents of historical flood events, drainage systems, ultimately mapping out flood prone areas. Community discussions on flood prevention at recent Tanzania Red Cross workshop

Ramani Huria was honoured to be part of a recent workshop organised by the Tanzania Red Cross Society as part of their project Zuia Mafuriko (Prevent Flooding). The workshop took place over two days, January 19th-20th 2016, and drew together a variety of stakeholders who play a role in flood prevention in Dar es Salaam. In addition to the Ramani Huria team, participants included members of Community Disaster Preparedness and Response Teams, Kinondoni Municipal council Executive Director, Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), and Ruvu Water Basin Authority. How to: JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap Editor)

JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap Editor) is a desktop application to conduct mapping activities, the data from which can be added to OpenStreetMap (OSM). It is an open source editor, written in Java. While initially the interface may seem daunting compared to some other editors, JOSM offers many features which are extremely useful and isn’t too difficult to master. Ramani Huria was excited to be invited by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) to present on digital community mapping to GIS Masters students on 29th of February, 2016. The session was facilitated by Dr. Festus Ndumbaro, university lecturer on Cartography and GeoVisualization. Ramani Huria presented on ‘Web Maps’ and led a discussion with the students, allowing for knowledge transfer between graduated and current students from UDSM. The HOT's OSM Export tool is a tool created by Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) that allows you to create custom OpenStreetMap (OSM) exports, you can download up-to-date maps for GIS analysis or use in GPS devices and/or smartphones. Red Cross Volunteers Active in Mapping Vingunguti

Vingunguti is an administrative ward in Ilala district in western Dar Es Salaam and according to the 2012 census has a population of 106,946. Vingunguti ward is a flood prone area of Dar es Salaam and many settlements within it are informal. The Msimbazi River flows around the West and North boundary of the ward, and during rainy season is a major cause of flooding.
